Air Arabia is based in Sharjah, which might be unfamiliar to some of you.

When I worked at Etihad Airways, many people would ask me where the airline was based. When I mentioned Abu Dhabi, a lot of people didn’t recognize it. So, I always explained that it’s the place next to Dubai.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are part of the United Arab Emirates, a federation of emirates (regions ruled by an emir or king). While Dubai is more famous, Abu Dhabi is actually the capital.

Sharjah is one of the emirates in the UAE, and on the map, it’s the purple area located next to Dubai.



If you look at pictures of Sharjah, you can see that it looks quite similar to Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Foundation and Early Growth

  • 2003: Air Arabia was founded in Sharjah, UAE. The airline introduced the low-cost carrier model to the Middle Eastern and North African aviation market. They also launched their first international route in 2004.
  • 2005: Air Arabia introduced the Airbus A320, improving the airline's operational efficiency.
  • 2007: The airline expanded into North Africa by establishing a subsidiary in Morocco, known as Air Arabia Maroc.
  • 2009: A subsidiary was also established in Egypt, named Air Arabia Egypt.
  • 2010: Air Arabia Pakistan was founded to strengthen connections between Pakistan, the Middle East, and North Africa.

These subsidiaries help operate secondary hub services.

Modern Growth

  • 2013: The airline introduced the latest Airbus A320neo, enhancing fuel efficiency and environmental considerations.
  • 2018: Digital services were improved, making online booking and check-in more convenient.
  • 2021: Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Air Arabia continued to provide services, contributing to the recovery of the aviation industry.



Destinations & Fleet Air Arabia operates to over 170 destinations. The airline continues to expand its network across the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Europe. They primarily use Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft.

Future Growth Plans Air Arabia plans to continue growing by expanding its network and introducing new aircraft. Just this year, they have begun flying to destinations such as the Maldives, Athens, and Vienna.
